Driving tips for visitors to Sri-Lanka
- Make sure that you have a valid driver’s license and that your vehicle is adequately insured.
- Although not mandatory, always wear your seatbelts for safety.
- Do not use a mobile phone without a hands-free or Blue-Tooth kit when on the road. It is a punishable offence to handle a mobile phone with your hands while driving.
- Headlamp flashing – means make way for me!
- Three wheelers / Buses / Motor Cyclists / Cyclists – the majority of these do not have proper working indicator lights on their vehicles. Be prepared to make sudden stops, swerves etc.
- Parking – parking on most pavement areas in Colombo is prohibited. Please use designated parking areas. The usual fee is Rs. 20.00 per hour.
- Give way to vehicles approaching from your right at intersections and roundabouts.
- Toot your horn to gain attention, caution other road users.
