Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic
Also known as the Sri Dalada Maligawa, this Buddhist Temple houses the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha and is located in the Royal Palace Complex of the former kingdom of Kandy. Three times a day, rituals are performed at this Temple, and tourists from all over the world come here for blessings from the Monks.
National Museum of Kandy
Just next to the Temple is this museum, where the primary exhibits are housed in the former home of the King’s Harem while the secondary exhibits are housed in the main palace building.
Royal Botanical Gardens
Drive your Kandy car about 5kms west of the city and you will reach the Royal Botanical Gardens (Peradeniya). While the garden exhibits more than 4000 species of plants sprawled across an area of over 147 hectares, it is renowned for its collection of beautiful Orchids.
Kandy Lake
A visit to Kandy center with your rent a car undoubtedly means that you have seen the Kandy Lake. It is located at the heart of the city and is surrounded by colonial-style buildings and the Royal Palace Complex. This is a man-made, protected lake where fishing is banned but boat rides are a much sought after recreational activity.
Arthur’s Seat
Just past the Royal Palace Park, you come across ‘Rajapihilla Mawatha’, a road which will take you 550 meters above sea level, to the popular lookout point of Arthur’s Seat. Here you will see a stunning, panoramic view of the Kandy Lake, the Royal Palace Complex, Sri Dalada Maligawa, and the entire Kandy City.
