Rent a Car in Colombo
Want to experience the ‘hustle bustle’ of Sri Lanka? Rent a car in Colombo and drive around simply to observe the daily lifestyle of an urban Sri Lankan. From the Colombo airport, it is about an hour’s drive to reach the commercial hub of the city. Now soaring with skyscrapers including properties such as Shangri La, Movenpick, Hilton, and Taj, the ‘Galle Face’ stretch is indeed a sight that all Sri Lankans are proud of.
If you are in Colombo for a few days, we could facilitate a long term car rental agreement so you could use the car whenever you need it until your stay comes to an end. Short term rental in Colombo is also possible if you want to maybe just do a private city tour or visit a few places in Colombo within a day or two.
When in Colombo
If you’ve completed your agreement for renting a car in Colombo, be sure to take a city tour to visit the following places during your stay:
Galle Face Green
Located in the proper financial and business capital of Sri Lanka, Galle Face Green is a large, scenic waterfront area lined with street food stalls. Once used as a location for sports such as horse racing, golf, cricket, and tennis, it is now a popular hangout spot for locals wanting to spend time outdoors.
Vihara Maha Devi Park
Another one of the British colonial administrations, this outdoor recreational spot is the oldest and largest in Colombo. The Vihara Maha Devi Park features a huge Buddha Statue (which replaced that of Queen Victoria) and a series of lovely water fountains.
Gangaramaya Temple and Beira Lake
With a fusion of modern architecture and cultural essence, the Gangaramaya Temple is of much importance to the Buddhist community. This is a 19th century construction with a unique feature of being located ON the scenic Beira Lake.
Independence Square
Independence Square is the area where the Independence Memorial Hall stands – a monument built in memory of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule. While several local events still take place here, on a daily basis, Independence Square is a location for cardio activities such as cycling, walking, jogging, and as a recreational spot for children.
National Museum
This is the only museum that represents the natural history and natural heritage of Sri Lanka. Rare exhibits such as indigenous fossils from the Jurassic era and natural heritage of the country’s endemic plant and animal species are displayed here.
Floating Market, Pettah
Located in the trading center of Colombo (Pettah), the Floating Market is a unique group of shopping stalls located on a lake. Tourists often gather here in their Colombo car rentals to purchase local handicrafts and fresh local produce.
Shopping malls
The newest on this front is the One Galle Face Mall by the Shangri La Group, located just opposite the Galle Face Green. Other popular malls are Crescat Boulevard, Liberty Plaza, Majestic City, and Odel Departmental Store.
